• FIVE-STEP METHODOLOGY (5S)

  1. Sort
  This is the process of objectively evaluating which things are necessary and getting rid of the things you do not need. Some common strategies for sorting include:
  • Removing items in an area that you no longer use – examples include forms that are outdated and no longer need to be filled out, broken equipment, obsolete product, or boxes with old branding.
  • Complete a green tag/red tag event – this is where a team goes through a given area and applies green stickers to items that are used regularly and applies red tags to those that are not used frequently. At the end of the event, all red-tagged items are removed from the area and reallocated to another area (if needed) or disposed of.
  • Establish a “holding” area for items that are difficult to classify – this “holding” area should be a regular stop on any Gemba Walk to maintain visibility of its contents. Any contents that do not have a disposition after a set amount of time (a week, a month) should be removed and disposed of.
  The goals of “sort” are to reduce time lost looking for an item, reduce the chance of distraction by unnecessary items, increase the amount of available, useable space and to eliminate obstacles in the work area.
  2. Straighten
  This is the practice of storing everything in an orderly manner so that it can be utilized efficiently for everyone. A familiar phrase associated with straighten is “A Place for Everything and Everything in Its Place”. Some common strategies for straighten include:
  • Identifying and designating a place for all materials required for the work in each area. Examples include:
  o Shadowboarding – for areas that require the use of different tools, make outlines of the tools required against a background so that it is visually easy to see if any required tools are missing or in the wrong place
  o Assign a fixed quantity to the materials stored (i.e. if you need 3 rolls of tape, have space for 3 rolls of tape – not 12 rolls of tape). Develop a replenishment system for when you are using your last roll of tape.
  o Develop a procedure so that all employees (especially in shared work areas) understand the rules for how items should be stored.
  • Compact storage to help utilize the space efficiently. • Ergonomically safe storage – store heavy items closer to the floor to avoid lifting and store frequently used items close to waist or shoulder height to avoid excessive stretching or reaching.
  The goals of “straighten” are to reduce excessive motions for the operators while maintaining a good procedure for the storage of materials required. Anything that is out of place should be easily recognizable thus leading to a reduction in wasted time searching for those items.
  3. Shine
  This is the practice of creating a clean workspace without garbage, dirt, dust or debris; so any problems can be more easily identified. Some common strategies for shine include:
  • Keep the floors cleaned of any debris and/or liquids – if your floors are kept clean and you find some motor fluid on the ground, you can conclude that one of the forklifts must have a leak. If the forklifts are stored in a defined manner, you can quickly determine the culprit. If the floors have not been cleaned regularly, you would not know how long the problem has been occurring.
  • Keep the machines in your work area clean – by cleaning all machines, you can prevent future downtime due to mechanical failures.
  The goals of “shine” are to increase the safety and effectiveness for the employees in an area. It should also allow for easy identification of any problems as they should be the exception as opposed to the norm (i.e. fluid on the floor).
  4. Standardize
  This is the practice of standardizing all the improvements made throughout the 5S process. For there to be continuous improvement, there must first be a standard set. These standards should apply throughout the facility. Some common strategies for standardize include:
  • Implement as much “visual management” as possible – visual management refers to a lot of the concepts from the other 5S elements, but the methods of communicating them to the organization should be consistent. Examples include:
  o Lines on the floor to show where people should be walking
  o Pictures of a workspace to show exactly what it should look like at start/end of shift
  o Pictures of acceptable/not-acceptable finished packing techniques
  o Standard work which shows how the job function in that area is to be completed
  • Expectations should be easy to understand across all areas – this allows employees to move from area to area and still understand the requirements for that area.
  The goals of “standardize” are to maintain a consistent level of expectation across all members of the organization for what is the “normal” for any given area. Any variances from that normal should be readily apparent and lead to immediate correction.
  5. Sustain
  This is the practice of implementing behaviors and habits to maintain the established standards over the long term and making workplace organization the key to managing the process for success. Some common strategies for sustain include:
  • Regular audits and reviews – examples include a rotating audit system that allows everyone to evaluate the success of the system, an audit system that allows for root-cause analysis and not just corrective action, or an audit system that involves management (i.e. daily by employee, weekly by supervisor, monthly by manager, etc.).
  • Continuous improvement – since sustaining is about making 5S part of the culture, it should be continuously improved. Involving the employees in those improvement opportunities will lead to better solutions as well as improved buy-in from those on the floor.
  • Leadership commitment and proper resources are vital –sustaining the gains is often the most difficult phase of 5S and many have fallen short of this goal. For a successful 5S program to flourish, leadership commitment and the investment of resources must occur.

• TYPES OF WAREHOUSE

  
  Private warehouses:
  This facility is owned and managed by the same enterprise that owns the merchandise handled and stored at the facility.
  Public warehouses:
  This is operated as an independent business offering a range of services such as storage, handling, and transportation- on the basis of a fixed or variable fee. These warehouses generally offer relatively standardized services to all clients.
  Contract warehouses:
  This has evolved from the public warehouse segment, and provides benefits of both the private and public alternatives. Contract warehousing is a long term, mutually beneficial arrangement which provides unique and specially tailored warehousing and logistics services exclusively to one client, where the vendor and client share the risks associated with the operation.
  Private warehouse
  A private warehouse is operated by the firm owning the product. The actual facility, however, may be owned or leased, according to company financials. Often it is not possible to find a warehouse for lease that fits the exact requirements of a firm. The major benefits of private warehousing include control, flexibility, cost, and other intangible benefits. Private warehouses provide more control since the enterprise has absolute decision-making authority over all activities and priorities in the facility. This control facilitates the ability to integrate warehouse operations with the rest of the firm’s internal logistics process.
  Private warehousing is usually considered less costly than public warehousing because private facility costs do not have a profit markup. This perceived benefit, however, may be misleading since public warehouses often are more efficient or may operate at lower wage scales. Private warehousing has also some intangible benefits, particularly with respect to market presence. A private warehouse with a firm’s name on it may produce customer perceptions of responsiveness and stability. This perception sometimes provides a firm with a marketing advantage over other enterprises. Private warehouses are relatively fixed and difficult to change because buildings have to be constructed or sold.
  Public warehouse
  Each warehouse type differs in its material handling and storage technology as a result of the product and environmental characteristics. On the basis of the range of specialized operations performed, public warehouses are classified as,
  General merchandise: - These warehouses are designed to handle general package commodities such as paper, small appliances, and household supplies.
  Refrigerated: - Warehouses (either frozen or chilled) handle and maintain food, medical items, and chemical products with special temperature requirements.
  Special commodity: - Warehouses are designed to handle bulk material or items with special handling considerations, such as tires or clothing.
  Bonded Warehouses: - These are licensed by the government to store goods prior to payment of taxes or duties. They exert very tight control over all movements in and out of the facility since government documents must be filed with each move. For example, cigarettes are often stored in bonded warehouses prior to having the tax stamp applied. This tactic saves the firm money by delaying tax payments; it also reduces inventory value substantially.
  Household goods and furniture: - Designed to handle and store large, bulky items such as appliances and furniture.
  Advantages of Public Warehouse- Many public warehouses offer combinations of these operations and have a low variable cost in comparison to privately operated facilities. The lower variable cost may be the result of lower pay scales, better productivity, or economy of scale. Public warehouses result in lower capital costs and hence increases return on investment (ROI) for the firm. Public warehousing offers flexibility in that it is easy to change the location, size, and number of facilities, allowing a firm to quickly respond to supplier, customer, and seasonal demands. Public warehousing offers significant scale economies since the volume for each customer is leveraged with that of other users. This results in high-volume operations that can spread fixed costs and justify more efficient handling equipment.
  A public warehouse can also leverage transportation by providing delivery of loads that represent many public warehouse customers. For example, rather than have vendor A and vendor B each deliver to a retail store from their own warehouse, a public warehouse serving both vendors could deliver a single combined load more efficiently. A public warehouse charges clients a basic fee for handling and storage. In the case of handling, the charge is based on the number of cases or pounds handled. For storage, the charge is assessed on the number of cases or weight in storage during the month. Such charges normally exceed the cost of private warehousing if adequate private facility volume exists.
  Contract warehouse
  Contract warehousing combines the best characteristics of both private and public operations. The long-term relationship and shared risk result in lower cost than typical public warehouse arrangements. Contract warehouse operations can provide benefits of expertise, flexibility, and economies of scale by sharing management, labor, equipment, and information resources across a number of clients. Although it is common for contract warehouse operators to share resources across clients in the same industry such as grocery products, it is not common that direct competitors will want to share resources. Contract warehouse operators are also expanding the scope of their services to include other logistics activities such as transportation, inventory control, order processing, customer service, and returns processing.
  Integrated Warehouse strategy- Many firms utilize a combination of private, public, and contract facilities. A private or contract facility may be used to cover basic year round requirements, while public facilities are used to handle peak seasons. In other situations, central warehouses may be private, while market area or field warehouses are public facilities.
  Full warehouse utilization throughout a year is a remote possibility. As a planning rule, a warehouse designed for full-capacity utilization will in fact be fully utilized between 75 and 85 percent of the time. Thus for the remaining time, the space needed to meet peak requirements is not utilized. In such situations, it may be more efficient to build private facilities to cover the major requirement and use public facilities to accommodate peak demand.
  An integrated warehouse strategy focuses on two aspects. The first concerns how many warehouses should be employed. The second concerns which warehouse types should be used to meet market requirements.

• ABOUT MAHATMA GANDHI

  ABOUT MAHATMA GANDHI Mahatma Gandhi is famous in India as “Bapu” or “Rastrapita.” His full name of him is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was a great freedom fighter who led India as a leader of nationalism against British rule. He was born on the 2nd of October in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He died on the 30th of January in 1948. M.K. Gandhi was assassinated by the Hindu activist Nathuram Godse, who was hanged later as a punishment by the government of India. Rabindranath Tagore has given him another name, “Mahatma of the Nation,” since 1948.
  Mahatma Gandhi is well known as the “Father of the Nation or Bapu” because of his most significant contributions toward our country’s independence. He was the one who believed in the non-violence and unity of the people and brought spirituality to Indian politics. He worked hard the remove the untouchability in the Indian society, upliftment of the backward classes in India, raised his voice to develop villages for social development, and inspired Indian people to use swadeshi goods and other social issues. He brought familiar people in front to participate in the national movement and encouraged them to fight for their actual freedom.
  He was one of the persons who converted people’s dream of independence into truth day through his noble ideals and supreme sacrifices. He is remembered for his wondrous works and primary virtues such as non-violence, truth, love, and fraternity. He was not born as excellent, but he made himself great through his hard struggles and work. The life of King Harischandra highly influenced him from the play titled Raja Harischandra. After schooling, he completed his law degree in England and began his career as a lawyer. He faced many difficulties in his life but continued walking as a great leader.
  He started many mass movements like the Non-cooperation movement in 1920, the civil disobedience movement in 1930, and finally the Quit India Movement in 1942, throughout the way to independence of India. After many struggles and work, the British Government finally granted independence to India. He was a straightforward person who worked to remove the color barrier and caste barrier. He also worked hard to remove the untouchability in the Indian society and named untouchables as “Harijan” means the people of God.
  He was a great social reformer and Indian freedom fighter who died a day after completing his aim of life. He inspired Indian people for the manual labour and said that arrange all the resource ownself for living a simple life and becoming self-dependent. He started weaving cotton clothes through the use of Charakha in order to avoid the use of videshi goods and promote the use of Swadeshi goods among Indians.
  He was a strong supporter of the agriculture and motivated people to do agriculture works. He was a spiritual man who brought spirituality to the Indian politics. He died in 1948 on 30th of January and his body was cremated at Raj Ghat, New Delhi. 30th of January is celebrated every year as the Martyr Day in India in order to pay homage to him.
